CABINS OF MINNESOTA – Bill Holm and Doug Ohman
As a Minnesotan and someone who has been known to retreat to a cabin in the summers for a little R&R, this book holds a lot of appeal to me. Bill Holm’s text offers up some interesting perspectives and reminiscences, from the poetry of W. B. Yeats, to the poetry of Po Chü-i (Chinese T’ang Continue reading

I AM THE WEAPON – Allen Zadoff
This is one of the most exciting, involving books I have read in a long time. A sixteen year old boy is a trained assassin. He was found and brought in to the ‘company’ by ‘Mike’ – the assassin who killed the boy’s mother and father. Now, ‘Mother’ and ‘Father’ and the invisible leaders sending Continue reading

AGE OF HEROES – James Lovegrove
Book #8 in a series? I wish I had known before I started. That is one of the problems with Advanced Reader Copies – you just don’t always know when a book is part of a series or not. I suppose in today’s book market it’s safer to assume a book IS part of a Continue reading

FINAL GIRLS – Mira Grant
Mira Grant didn’t invent the zombie story, nor did she re-popularize it (I’d give Max Brooks the credit for that), but I think no one writes in the genre better than she. Grant also incorporates technology into her fiction as well, if not better, than most. And Final Girls, a novella, exemplifies both of these talents. Continue reading

THE TUMBLING TURNER SISTERS – Juliette Fay
I’ve found that I really enjoy historical fiction and there have been some really outstanding titles in that category in the last few years. And when I saw that there was this book, The Tumbling Turner Sisters by Juliette Fay, which centers around some performers in vaudeville, I knew this was something I had to Continue reading

SWORD IN THE STARS – Wayne Thomas Batson
I’ve been making it a goal to catch up on my back ARC reading and this, at the time of my reading, is the oldest in my ARC queue, so it’s nice to check it off the list. Alastair Coldhollow is a former assassin who is repentant and haunted by his past. He is searching Continue reading

THE CLUE IN THE PAPYRUS SCROLL – Gertrude Chandler Warner
When I was growing up and first started reading books (as opposed to picture books), The Boxcar Children were a real staple in my reading diet, so I was pleased to see that their adventures continue in this updated series. The Alden children (Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny) are now globe-hopping with the family dog, Continue reading
