ECOLOGY AND RELIGION – Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim
NON-FICTION WEEK I have long wondered why churches weren’t being more active and vocal about the need for environmental and ecological controls over God’s earth. In the early 1990’s I read a book (God is Green) that opened my eyes to this issue. Now, John Grim and Mary Evelyn Tucker, leader figures on this… Continue reading

THE SOUL OF AN OCTOPUS – Sy Montgomery
This book took me completely by surprise, and in a fantastically good way. First, author Sy Montgomery manages to capture the reader’s attention with the subject matter (octopuses [which is the correct way to write the plural of octopus, and Montgomery explains why]), but she holds the reader with her gentle narrative, which strokes our… Continue reading

THE NIGHT OF LONG KNIVES – Fritz Leiber
THROWBACK THURSDAY: REVIEWING A REISSUE Dover Publications is a reprint publisher and I’ve really enjoyed a number of the works that they’ve selected for re-publication. This novella from Fritz Leiber, a giant in the golden age of fantasy and science fiction, is a once-lost treasure. Leiber is often associated with fantasy, and more precisely, Sword… Continue reading

A STITCH IN CRIME – Cathy Elliot
I have some friends who are quilters, and coupled with the fact that I’ve rather recently discovered that I enjoy the mystery book market, I thought I’d broaden my reading a bit and try this mystery in the “Quilts of Love” series. What I’ve learned is that there are a LOT of different kinds of… Continue reading

MUIRWOOD: THE LOST ABBEY – graphic novel
GRAPHIC NOVEL WEEK Author Jeff Wheeler and his publisher, Jet City Comics, is trying something a little different. They are trying to use the Kindle in a slightly new format, producing a serial graphic novel that will be delivered to Kindles monthly. This title is set for five consecutive issues. So…a monthly comic… Continue reading

MILLENNIUM – graphic novel
GRAPHIC NOVEL WEEK I may be one of the few people who enjoy science fiction and dark fantasy who has never seen a single episode of the television series X-Files, though of course I am familiar with the main characters and the premise. Had I known ahead of time that this book had a strong… Continue reading

COPPERHEAD: VOL. 1 – graphic novel
GRAPHIC NOVEL WEEK Copperhead, a graphic novel by Jay Faerber & Scott Godlewski is quite possibly the best new series I’ve read this year. Part science fiction, part western, part mystery/detective story, Copperhead manages to blend the different genres together nicely to create an engrossing story that we just want to keep reading. But what works… Continue reading

THE ADVENTURES OF BASIL AND MOEBIUS – graphic novel
GRAPHIC NOVEL WEEK The tag for this book (as quoted from Goodreads) starts: “Alaric Moebius and Basil Fox are two lovable scoundrels looking to make a quick fortune.” Unfortunately I didn’t see it that way. I saw two scoundrels who lacked a strong moral compass trying to make their fortune. This book features three stories… Continue reading

STAR TREK/PLANET OF THE APES: THE PRIMATE DIRECTIVE – graphic novel
GRAPHIC NOVEL WEEK Apparently I’m not the only sci-fi geek old enough to remember the original Star Trek AND the Planet of the Apes franchise, otherwise why would anyone bother to do a cross-over with these two science fiction classics from the 1960’s-70’s? At the time, I was just the right age and stereotype to be… Continue reading

THE OCTOBER FACTION VOL. 1 – graphic novel
GRAPHIC NOVEL WEEK Is this an Addams Family for the new millennium? The October Faction is a graphic novel about Frederick Allan, a monster hunter who is now retired. His children want to follow in his footsteps … an idea that Frederick doesn’t care for. The daughter, Vivian, proves herself more than capable, though I’m… Continue reading

FABLES NO. 150 – graphic novel
Fables 150 is a well-done conclusion to this long-running comic/graphic novel series. The book starts with a longer piece, illustrated by the familiar Mark Buckingham and Steve Leialoha, which does a nice job of wrapping up the general arc of the series. The real bonus here is the inclusion of a number of shorter stories,… Continue reading
