ALDO LEOPOLD’S ODYSSEY – Julianne Lutz Warren
I’m actually rather flummoxed on what to say in this review…I’ve been staring at a blank page for half an hour, not quite sure how to start. This is a biography of conservationist, writer Aldo Leopold. If you don’t already know who Aldo Leopold is, then you probably picked up this book by mistake. Leopold Continue reading

BAN THIS BOOK – Alan Gratz
Amy Anne Ollinger is a fourth-grader who loves to read. Her favorite book is From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, which she reads over and over again. But when she stops in the school library to check the book out and it’s not on the shelf she has a moment of panic, but Continue reading
-
THE ELUSIVE ELIXIR – Gigi Pandian
Ah…finally. The story develops, is focused and we get the read that we’ve been looking for through three volumes. Zoe Faust is a 300 year old alchemist. Her specialty is creating potions of healing, But all her knowledge and years of experience aren’t helping her heal her good friend Dorian. Dorian is a living gargoyle, Continue reading

NEW BOY – Tracy Chevalier
I’ve read a couple of these Hogarth Shakespeare books (re-tellings of Shakespeare’s plays) and my reactions have been mixed. But Tracy Chevalier’s New Boy is a powerful, poignant re-telling of Othello. Osei Kokote is the son of a diplomat. He has moved around a lot and all too often been the new boy at school. Continue reading

STANDARD HOLLYWOOD DEPRAVITY – Adam Christopher
While I wasn’t thrilled with author Adam Christopher’s book Hang Wire, I’m having a blast with his tongue-in-cheek mystery/detective series ‘Ray Electromatic Mysteries.’ Raymond Electromatic is a robot. He’s the last of his kind … a programmed assassin created by the U.S. government. But the program is what got killed and Ray is the only Continue reading

DOMINION – Peter McLean
I wasn’t particularly impressed with the first book in The Burned Man series by Peter McLean, but being behind in my ARC reading, I already had the second (and third) books on my Kindle for reading and review. Dominion is the second book in the series. There’s nothing particularly new here in the second book. Continue reading

THE MOTION OF PUPPETS – Keith Donohue
I was venturing blind into new territory here. I was not familiar with author Keith Donohue and I was not sure what genre of story this was going to be, though I suspected (by the cover, mostly) it would be dark fantasy/horror. But it’s more than that, and not that at all. It’s a sad, Continue reading

VINEGAR GIRL – Anne Tyler
The Hogarth Shakespeare series is on an incredibly challenging task to get today’s writers retelling Shakespeare’s stories. In some cases, such as here with Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler, we see how challenging this task is. I’ve been a fan of Tyler’s since Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant first came out in the 1980’s, and Continue reading

FOREVER FREE – Joe Haldeman
THROWBACK THURSDAY: REVIEWING A REISSUE Although I had read Haldeman’s The Forever War when it was first published in the 1970’s, I had not read any of the sequels to the book. Forever Free followers our ‘forever soldier,’ William Mandella, who is a man without a country … without a world. As he fought in Continue reading

AURORA MODEL KITS – Thomas Graham
Try as I might, I could never get any of my children interested in model kits. I grew up in the 1970’s and I have fond memories of sitting in the living-room, at a card-table covered with newspapers, and gluing and then painting plastic model kits. I didn’t spend much time looking at manufacturer names Continue reading

THE HIGHWAYMAN – Craig Johnson
Although I haven’t reviewed them here (yet), I’ve recently listened to the audio versions of the first three Longmire books by Craig Johnson. I started reading/listening to the books because of my enjoyment of the television series. And while I look forward to the next (and final?) season to be airing this fall, I do Continue reading
