Natalie Duncan is thrilled to get her first teaching job, even if it is in Montana. But the California girl isn’t prepared to step into instant winter. How … Who will keep her warm? Hunky fire chief Hawk Winchester to the rescue, again and again. Kiss her already and let’s do this!
I’m trying to broaden my horizons and understand the romance genre, and this is my second romance. Foolish me … it’s by the same as author as the first romance I read and reviewed. I will have to try again but with a different author, just for variety’s sake.
Author Melody Anne moves the story along quickly, not spending too much time developing characters but pushing the paper-thin story through. The main characters fall instantly in love but both fight against their feelings. Natalie isn’t sure how long she’ll be in Montana and Hawk doesn’t think he’ll settle down. But two busy-bodies in town have other plans for the young lovers. And that’s pretty much the story. Hawk is a little too good to be true and Natalie is a little too scatter-brained to be taken seriously, but clearly this is exactly what readers of this sort of romance want.
I had a hard time right off the bat with Natalie getting off a plane in Montana (in November) and being shocked at the weather and how she wasn’t dressed for it or prepared for it. A lack of foresight and preparation in a school teacher does not instill confidence. But we’re not really supposed to care about her as a teacher, but for her as a love interest for the hottest man in Montana.
There is some steamy sex between these two (of course) described in fairly graphic detail, which earns a porn rating from me (“spread her thighs” “throbbing as he ran his erection along the outside of her folds”).
Despite this, I didn’t mind the story so much. Not very believable characters, but the circumstances felt true and Melody Anne understands her reading audience and writes to them well.
Has it changed my mind on the ‘romance’ genre? Not in the least.
Looking for a good book? Safe in His Arms, by Melody Anne, is an erotic romance novella that doesn’t have much of a plot, but if you want too-good-and-good-looking-to-be-true characters who fall in love and lust, then this works well.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
