Ah…I remember the days when I couldn’t wait for the Scholastic book fair that the school would have once a year. As a reader of comic books, this is precisely the sort of book that I would be drawn to.
It appears that Scholastic is issuing a few of these books in a “Backstories” series, giving some very basic facts about a superhero’s beginnings, training, and highlights of his/her career as a super-hero/crime-fighter.
I can’t say that I was ever a big fan of Wonder Woman so I was pleasantly surprised that I learned a few things here, though I suspect the more dedicated comics readers will find this book overly simplistic and full of information that is fairly well-known. But this book isn’t for the established comics reader. This is for young readers who might be just starting to get interested in comics or at least interested in comics heroes because of the movies and television shows that are popular today.
Most youngster will pick up this book more for the interior art (by Marcus To). My ARC does not have the finished art (in a few cases, no art at all) but rather some rough sketches to let us know the general idea of what the art will look like. I quite liked these sketches, personally, but I know they will be cleaned up and look sharp and crisp for the final book.
There is no ‘story’ here. It really is an abbreviated version of Wonder Woman’s biography, suitable for a nine-year old.
I suspect that this book will do well for Scholastic, given the hero movies and Wonder Woman’s appearance in the Batman/Superman movie coming in March (2016).
Looking for a good book? Wonder Woman: Amazon Warrior is a graphic novel-like biography aimed at very young readers and should fill in the reader on a good deal of Wonder Woman’s history and highlights, while priming them for an up-coming movie and likely more age-appropriate books.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Edelweiss, in exchange for an honest review.
