Looking For a Good Book

UNFED – Kirsty McKay

I recently went through my back-log of un-read ARCs with the intention of catching up on my reading and one of the older books in my ARC queue is this … Unfed, by Kirsty McKay.

I like zombie fiction and I like a lot of YA fiction, so I thought this would be a fun read.  I knew it was a sequel, but I was willing to give it a read anyway.  I quickly forgot that it was a sequel…there wasn’t too much that I felt I was missing and the book is full of action.

Teens Bobby and Smitty are on a school bus, in Scotland, that crashes and rolls.  There is panic and mayhem everywhere.  The next thing that Bobby knows is that she is waking up in a medical center, but this one seems to have some very strict restrictions and is very secure.  But maybe not secure enough.  When a horde of undead get through, Bobby can’t seem to find a way out.  She also learns that the medical center she is in belongs to the corporation Xanthro, which has been experimenting with a virus that has created these undead and Xanthro wants to stop Bobby and her friends from revealing their dirty secrets.  Face off against the horde of zombies or the Xanthro goons who will shoot to kill?  Only Bobby and her wily friends can choose and find a way to survive.

There is a nice blend of thriller and humor here and the characters react pretty much as you might expect teens to react.  Even so, I had a lot of trouble getting in to the book.  The characters really didn’t grab me.  Perhaps this was one of the results of having not read the first book … I wasn’t already invested in what happened to these people.  I’ve also never been to Scotland and couldn’t picture where they were or how this location came in to play.  It seemed important enough to mention it a few times, but the location was never well-described.

I had fun … McKay does a nice job of keeping the action moving … and this was a delightful diversion for a few mornings of reading, but I can’t say that I’m eager to seek out the first book or that I would want to read any other adventures with this group of characters.  I would, though, be interested in seeing what else McKay has.

Looking for a good book?  Unfed, by Kirsty McKay, is a teen zombie romp in Scotland.  If that sounds appealing, you’ll probably enjoy this book; if it doesn’t sound appealing, don’t bother because it won’t convert you.

I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
