GUARDIANS BOOK 1: THE GIRL – Lola StVil

In the film world there are giants like George Lucas and Steven Spielberg and then we have the Roger Corman’s … those who produce fast, cheap knock-offs that are definitely entertaining but not likely to have blockbuster sales.  The same exists in the literary world. There are series that are enormously popular (Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Divergent, Maze Runner, etc) and then there are the indie-published options (I initially wrote “alternatives” but in truth, it isn’t an ‘either/or’ choice) – cheaper and less polished.  The Guardians series (based on this first book) by Lola StVil is the latter.

There’s not much apparent plot here. Our protagonist, Emmy, is an emotionally charged teenage girl. It’s been decried that she’s going to save the world.  Or … she’s going to destroy it. It’s all on her.

This should be a big responsibility but all Emmy thinks or cares about is Marcus. The first moment she laid eyes on him she was completely smitten. But Marcus has a girlfriend (Ameana) and Emmy isn’t just another girl … she’s his job.  Marcus is Emmy’s guardian angel. If she’s going to save the world she needs to be protected.

There’s plenty of cheesy dialog (I randomly opened the book and the first thing I read was: I’m finding it hard to look him in the eye. He’s so beautiful. I try and focus on the fact that he was a jerk to me the night before. That helps me think of him as a jerky gorgeous angel instead of well… a gorgeous angel.)

Usually, in a book like this, the girl and guy will finally get together, and given that Emmy is constantly moping about and pining for him it seems like it’s the only way to make her happy.  And, yeah, Marcus will come around.  Sort of.  He’s perfectly fine with dating two girls.

Well that’s a twist, at least.

The bigger story of the Guardians and Emmy’s role gets side-lined and then completely lost behind the very pouty, obsessive feelings she has toward Marcus.  I’m not nearly interested enough in any of these people to want to read more about them, and the story hasn’t shown up yet.

Looking for a good book?  Too much obsession with one another to be a paranormal fantasy and no actual feelings for each other to be a romance, The Guardians Book 1: The Girl by Lola StVil defies categorization.
