VAMPIRE ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS – Shane Carrow

It is 1914 and Sam Carter is a young American with a taste for adventure, but also a strong sense of self-preservation.  He’d joined the Foreign Legion but has now, somewhat impulsively, abandoned his unit and is on the Orient Express headed to Constantinople. Also on the train, among the French and German businessmen, is British diplomat, Lucas Avery. Avery is resentful of his assignment to deep in the Ottoman Empire and is well into his drink and cigar when Carter joins the train.

A scream one night brings both men to investigate and what they see defies common sense. Is there really a vampire riding the train? The more the pair look into it, the more this seems to be the case. Now, as the train screams through the countryside, Carter and Avery rush to uncover the identity of the mysterious vampire and protect the unsuspecting riders.

Author Shane Carrow does a really fine job of keeping this story moving at locomotive speed from the moment of the scream through to the end of the book.

The American and the Brit are a fun, unlikely pair – just the sort of team-up that invites a lot of fun, internal, not-too-serious conflict. While there’s a nice set-up to the location and the characters prior to the start of the internal action, we get a strong sense that there’s a lot more to learn about these two.

It should go without saying that Carrow is capitalizing on the mash-up concept that was fairly popular for some time. Taking a popular literary title and adding a supernatural twist to it. Fortunately Carrow does it well, keeps up the excitement, and makes it work.

This is the first in, currently, a three books series and I’d be interested in reading more in the Carter and Avery series if I happened on another one of the books.

Looking for a good book? Vampire on the Orient Express by Shane Carrow is a thrill-a-minute supernatural adventure.
